Ramps

<<< Back

Ramps come in all shapes and sizes from threshold, sold, modular, single, double and trifold ramps to name a few. Remember there are ADA safety guidelines to the amount of step rise to how long of a ramp you should get. For manual wheelchairs it recommended for every 1″ of rise you need 1 foot of ramp
For powered devices for every 1″ of rise you would need 6″ of ramp length.
Any ramp over 10′ also requires a railing to be installed.

Different types of ramps available
Threshold ramps and mats
Solid one-piece ramps
Single fold grip ramps and anti-slip ramps
Multi folding ramps

Threshold Ramps and Mats
Threshold ramps come in sold, sectional, height adjustable and rubber entry mats. Threshold ramps and mats are great for making a smooth transition from outside to indoors. Also, smaller obstacles like thresholds and doorways where it’s just too high of an entryway to get your mobility device over short threshold ramps are a great solution.

Solid Ramps
Great for three-wheel scooters where the is no join in the center of the ramp and a good even surface.

Single fold and multi fold ramps
Foldable ramps are great for traversing over doorsteps or doorway thresholds. Folding ramps can be removed the ramp take up little room for storing by folding.

Can I Use a Ramp with My Vehicle?
We’ve found that folding ramps are not so good for loading mobility devices into vehicles.

In our experience, unless you have a vehicle with a low floor, we don’t recommend using foldable ramps for loading mobility devices into vehicles. There are ADA recommendations that for every 1″ of rise you would require 1 foot of ramp for any mobility device that isn’t powered by a motor which we recommend you never use the power of your mobility to device to traverse such a steep incline. By using the power of your device is way beyond the manufacture’s maximum allow incline amount (between 6 and 8 Deg) and secondly can be dangerous for operator if the device was to tip off the ramp.
An average 6′ single fold aluminum can weigh as much as 45 lbs. and can take up a lot of room in your vehicle not to mention it can damage the interior of your vehicle. you can get trifold or multi fold ramps but again they heavy can need room in your vehicle to store them. Depending on the model of scooter you have most transportable scooter parts weigh less than 40lbs. so lifting is a problem, and you have a scooter that disassembles you might as well just lift the parts of the scooter than struggle with a six-foot ramp, unloading, unfolding then putting it back in the vehicle again along with your mobility device as well!
