We are seeing more customer being
misinformed when purchasing a new vehicle with
regards to transporting their scooter or Power
Wheelchair.
If you already have a scooter or Power Wheelchair
and are looking to purchase a new vehicle to aid
with transport please contact us first.
Please be aware that buying a vehicle on the
premises that its capable of towing doesn't
necessarily mean the vehicle has sufficient *tongue
capacity to carry the weight of the lift and
scooter/power chair. Please do not just rely
on the car salesman's word that the vehicle is
capable of such extra weight added to the rear of
the vehicle without them doing the proper checks
first as we have seen this can be a costly mistake.
There are two different ratings a vehicle has with
regards to **towing capacity and *tongue weight.
These different ratings given by the manufacture
have two different purposes. Most manufactures
supply the tongue and towing weight capacity in your
cars owners manual.
*Tongue weight:
This is the maximum rated weight capacity the the
manufacture recommends that the car tow hitch fitted
to the vehicle is rated for. The tongue weight
figure accounts for the maximum allowed downward
weight allowed by the frame support, suspension,
braking, cooling system and transmission. Even if
you fit a 500 lbs. rated tow hitch to your vehicle
doesn't mean that the car can support such weight
without extra modification to the above.
**Towing capacity:
This is the maximum rated weight that can be towed
via trailer supported by an axel behind the vehicle.
This weight also takes in to account frame support,
suspension, braking, cooling system and
transmission.
Do's and Don'ts when buying a used lift...
Just a few things to think about when buying a
used lift
There are quite a few pre-owned scooter and
wheelchair lifts on the market but it can be
an expensive mistake to choose a lift that
is not compatible with your vehicle. Before
buying a lift check your vehicle is capable
of caring a power lift. Also check
lifting capacity of the lift you thinking of purchasing. Try and find out what the overall
weight of the lift is, and also if it has an
added swing-away arm fitted which also will increase the overall weight. Next
add the weight of the scooter to
the weight of the lift. Some but not all rear mounted lifts are very heavy
and require a substantial vehicle to carry
them. Some also only come with a 2" class II
or class III receiver bar due to their weight
and carrying capacity.
Some sedan's and even
small SUV's may be able to have a tow hitch
option to be attach to the vehicle but they
also may have a manufactures caring/towing
capacity restriction. Some of today's
vehicles are being made from aluminum and
also have no ability to attach a tow hitch
or have a restriction to their towing/caring
weight. Please check with your vehicles
manufacture for information on your vehicle.
Putting a large rear hitch
mounted platform lift to carry a mid sized
scooter to a sedan could require modification
to the vehicles suspension. Also factor in
if you don't have a hitch receiver already
on your vehicle add at least $200
- $300 for the receiver and installation. (wiring
not included)
Don't forget this is not
including the wiring and adjustments require
to fit the lift. After all that, then to
find out your four door sedan will require
suspension modification that bargain
lift online where the sellers advert say's
"it fits any vehicle" becomes a expensive
mistake. Get it right talk to us first we
can give you free advice and supply you with
the right lift and install it for you. You can also check out all the
manufactures websites such as
Harmar's Lift Finder to give you a good
idea to see what your
vehicle can handle.
On a final note regarding used power lifts,
DO NOT take the word of the seller that the
lifts works!! Always, always see it working
and if possible with your scooter on it. Make sure it can
lift the weight of your scooter with ease.
If the lift significantly slows down or even
stops while the vehicle is
running the lift might not be rated for that
amount of weight or even more seriously the
motor might be coming to the end of its life
due to worn bushes and or failing motor
windings. Check for week and broken welds
also loose or bent bolts, connections or any
impact damage. Listen
for and banging or clanking while the lift
travels up and down with weight on it.
If the lift has a swing-away arm option add to the lift make sure the lift
swings away and locks back in to position easily. Swing-away arms are made to be
operated very easily without much assistance such as having to lift the platform
to unlatch the swing-away. In most cases if the swing-away arm is difficult to
release or close this is a good indication the swing-away arm has been
improperly used or opened with the scooter or power chair still on the lift.
Swing-away arms are designed to be rated for the lift only capacity to allow
access to the rear of the vehicle with no scooter or power chair on the lift.
Using a swing-away with any unit on the lift will damage the swing-away arm and
invalidate any warranty.
